Overcoming socio-economic and political constraints to wise forests management: lessons from the Amazon
The Amazon basin as been the focus of intensive research on forest management for over a decade. As a result, there is a considerable and growing body of knowledge about the "supply side" of forest management; products harvested, production techniques, and their environmental implications. However, virtually no research effort has been devoted to seeing what happens to forest products after they reach the riverbank. There is very little knowledge about distribution, trading networks, pricing and markets for forest products. This information is vital to the practicality of the many forest management projects being proposed by governmental and non-governmental organizations active in Brazil.
