Aplicación del concepto de uso múltiple de la tierra en la cuenca del Canal de Panamá

The watershed of the Panama Canal has gone through a period of serious deterioration as a result of inadequate human activities; 48 per cent of its 326,225 hectares have been deforested, causing great pressures on adjacent areas, which still conserve their forest cover. Actually ten million (10,000.000) cubic meters of sediments per year are washed down into the lakes; at this rate, by the year 2,040 the impoundment capacity of the watershed will be reduced by 50 per cent and consequently its normal navigation operations. The Ministry of Agriculture Development of the Republic of Panama has initiated a management plan in order to check further deterioration of this watershed, which comprehends the following sub-projects: Reforestation; Conservation and rehabilitation of land and water resources; Development or reservoirs and national parks; Erosion control through controlled management and substitution of pasture lands
