Fisheries Emergency Rapid Assessment Tool (FERAT)

Natural or technological disasters and complex and protracted emergencies seriously affect fishing communities and the ecosystem they depend upon, with different impacts on men and women. Boats, fishing gear, and infrastructure are often lost and damaged. In addition, disasters can cause threats to aquatic ecosystems such as fish species habitats and to biodiversity. At the same time, the rapid restoration of fisheries after a disaster can help maintain its role as a provider of nutritious food and employment. Immediately after or during disasters, governments and humanitarian agencies are mobilized and often provide replacement gears and boats to fishing communities. This manual provides the steps for assessing the fisheries situation after natural or technological disasters Blurband during complex or protracted emergencies and provides guidance in the form of decision trees. The Fisheries Emergency Rapid Assessment Tool (FERAT) is divided into six steps. It is recommended that the steps be followed in the sequence in which they are presented here. It is not always possible to have data, and in situations that are data poor, the tool offers guidance on where such data may be found.
