Dog Population Management
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) organized an expert meeting in March 2011in Banna, Italy, to discuss how to manage dog populations efficiently without causing animal suffering while also promoting public health and welfare. During the meeting the experts identified different dog population management (DPM) options to be adapted to the local context’s ethical, socio-economic, political and religious specificities, and provided recommendations for the successful implementation of relevant international standards, best practices as well as for further action and research at national and international levels.
