Soil and water conservation in semi-arid areas

This Bulletin reviews the extent of the erosion problem and the human and livestock populations pressure on semi- arid ecosystems. Given the lack of appropriate technology to the needs of subsistence farmers and nomadic pastoralists, it looks at the possibilities of improving agriculture through biological conservation, water harvesting, improved farming and similarly through simple and low-cost mechanical works. Water conservation is also to be applied to grazing land and to trees and shrubs. This Bulletin does not offer easy solutions, but reviews methods and techniques which have been tested and found useful in semi-arid regions
