FAO-UNESCO soil map of the world, 1:5000000. V. 1: Legend

The project for a joint FAo/Unesco Soil Map of the World was undertaken following a recommendation of the International Society of Soil Science. It is the first attempt to prepare, on the basis of international cooperation, a soil map covering all the continents of the world in a uniform legend, thus enabling the correlation of soii units and the comparison of soils on a global scale. The project, which started in 1961, fills a gap in present knowledge of soils and soil potentialities throughout the world, and provides a useful instrument in planning agricultural and economic development. The present volume is the first of a set of ten which, with maps, make up the complete publication of the Soil Map of the World. This first volume records introductory information and presents the definitions of th.e elements of the legend which is used uniformly throughout the publication. Each of the nine following volumes contains an explanatory text and soil maps covering one of the main regions of the world.
