Comparative study of Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium levels during peripartum in dairy cows in different productive systems in Uruguay and Spain

The goal of the present work was to study the variations of Ca, P and Mg during peripartum of dairy cows in  two different productive systems: Intensive (I) (Spain) and Semi-intensive grazing (SI) (Uruguay). All animals were pregnant multiparous Holstein cows, with a mean age of 4 years, and an average body weight (BW) of 574 kg. Group I was composed of 32 cows, 16 with calvings during spring and 16 in autumn. The SI group composed of 64 animals, 22 with calvings during autumn and 42 with calvings during spring. Clinical evaluation and productive monitoring were performed, and blood samples were taken every 7 days from 30 days before calving up to 30 days postpartum. Minerals blood concentrations during the peripartum in both management systems were compared, according to the physiological state of animals and the season. A productive system effect in Ca and Mg levels and in Ca / P ratio was detected. Changes in the minerals levels were detected in the vicinity of partum, and a calving season effect (autumn-spring) was also observed in Mg levels.

En el presente trabajo hemos estudiado las variaciones de Ca, P y Mg durante el periparto en vacas lecheras manejadas en dos diferentes sistemas de manejo: Intensivo (I) (España) y Semi-pastoril (SP) (Uruguay). Todas las vacas eran multíparas de raza Holstein, gestantes, con edad media de 4 años y un peso promedio de 574 kg PV. El grupo I estuvo formado por 32 vacas, de las cuales 16 tuvieron partos en primavera y 16 en otoño. El grupo SP estuvo compuesto por 64 animales, 22 con partos en otoño y 42 en primavera. Se realizó seguimiento clínico, productivo y se extrajeron muestras de sangre cada 7 días desde 30 días antes del parto hasta 30 días postparto. Se compararon las concentraciones sanguíneas de minerales durante el periparto en ambos sistemas de producción, según el estado fisiológico de los animales y la estación del año. Hubo efecto del sistema de producción sobre las concentraciones de Ca y Mg y sobre la relación Ca/P. En las proximidades del parto se constataron cambios en los niveles de los minerales evaluados y se observó efecto de la estación de parición (otoño-primavera) sobre las concentraciones de Mg.
