Estrus Synchronization With Prostaglandin F2α and Artificial Insemination After Detected Estrus in Beef Heifers

With the objective of collaborating to national information about reproductive management schemes in cattle, results of a program of artificial insemination (AI) in beef heifers synchronized with Prostaglandin and inseminated after heat detection are presented. A total of 378 heifers Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and their crosses were used in a protocol which consisted of detection of estrus and IA for 6 days, administration of prostaglandin F2á (PG) at the 7th day and detection of estrus and IA for 5 days. Detection of estrus, conception and pregnancy rates were calculated on the 12 days that lasted the work. The percentage of estrus detection was 87%, of conception (pregnant over inseminated) was 72%t and pregnancy (pregnant over offered) was 63%. Peak estrus occurrence after PG was at 48 to 72 hours of treatment (24.1-20.4%, respectively).
