Isolation of Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC) in zoos and wildlife reserves in Uruguay during the period 1978-2008
Forty-seven samples of animals from zoological parks and reserves of fauna of Uruguay were processed in the period 1978-2008. Bacteriological studies to cultivate and characterize Mycobacteria samples from spleen, omentum, stomach, nodes, liver, pancreas, peritoneum, pleura, lung, kidney and nasal and tracheal secretion were made .Of the Forty-seven processed samples thirteen strains of Mycobacterium avium (MAC) were isolated from birds: nine samples of (Moorish Eagle, two pheasants, a Peacock, a White Duck, two common ducks, a Raven, and kettle of Mount), of Capuchin monkey of de red deer axis, of coati and goat of Gabon. We recommend implementing intradermals tuberculine test to all animals in zoos and wildlife reserves, and proceed to implement systematic measures of hygiene and disinfection in the «habitats». In addition, because it is a zoonosis, establishing measures of prevention and hygiene for personnel in the charge of animals care in these establishments, as well as visitors to these recreational spaces.
