PHYTOPHAGOUS AND PREDATORY ARTHROPODS IN THE BROCCOLI CROP (BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. ITALICA) IN CERRO PUNTA, CHIRIQUÍ, PANAMA

The aim of the study was to determine the presence of phytophagous and predatory arthropods associated with broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) crops in the location of Cerro Punta, Chiriquí. To do this, two plots were surveyed in May 2024, one 15 days after transplantation in the field (dat) and the other 30 dat. A random sampling of 100 broccoli plants was carried out in both plots (n = 200), each consisting of 18 sub-plots, for the manual capture of arthropods using an entomological net, and specialized literature was consulted. The results obtained were, in the plot with 30 dat, there was presence of Agrotis ipsilon less than 5% in the plants inspected, finding in one plant a mass of Trichoplusia ni eggs and in another a mass of Spodoptera exigua eggs, Plutella xylostella was present in 87% of the inspected plants, Myzus persicae in 30% and 1% of Diabrotica fulvicornis; while in the plot with 15 dat, there was presence of P. xylostella and M. persicae, both with 20%. Regarding predatory arthropods, only in the plot with 30 dat, there was presence of Thomisidae (Araneae), eggs and an adult of Zelus longipes, eggs of Chrysopidae (Neuroptera) and a Syrphidae larva (Diptera), each with 1%. In conclusion, the presence of six taxa of phytophagous insects and four taxa of predatory arthropods in the broccoli crop in Cerro Punta was determined.
