POTENTIAL PERSISTENT PEST INSECTS IN SOURSOP BACKYARD CROPS IN PANAMA
Soursop (Annona muricata L., 1753), is a fruit appreciated for its benefits for human health, which has encouraged more entrepreneurs to venture into this crop; however, there are insect species that can affect the crop, so the aim of this research was to identify potential persistent pest insects in backyard soursop crops in Panama. For this, from April 2020 to March 2023, five backyards with soursop in the country were visited: El Embarcadero, Panama; Arraiján, West Panama; Cerro Turega, Cocle; Llano Abajo, Los Santos; Veladero de Tole, Chiriquí. The study was of an observational, descriptive and exploratory nature, developing 10 field trips per site (50 in total) during the morning hours, specially from April to July, which are the months of greatest production and the predominant surrounding vegetation was listed. A total of 17 trees were checked during the study, recording the frequency of observation per insect species per visit, requiring that it be found in at least one tree per visit per location. According to the results, in the five study locations, with 10 sightings per site (50 in total), specimens of Guayaquila gracilicornis (Stål, 1869) (Hemiptera: Membracidae) associated with Camponotus sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Trigona sp. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were present. In Arraiján, 10 sightings of Antiteuchus tripterus (Fabricius, 1787) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were also found; a pest species of other strategic crops such as cocoa. In conclusion, three potential insect pests of backyard soursop in Panama were identified.
