SOURCES OF SOLID WASTE GENERATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PANAMA AS A POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL RISK.

The waste is known by the name of garbage or solid waste and corresponds to everything that the human being discards, whether of organic or inorganic origin and is the product of human activities carried out in different public or private places. According to research, one of the generators of solid waste are the higher education centers that contribute a significant percentage, identifying plastics, glass, cardboard, metal, others of animal or vegetable origin and special or dangerous waste, which makes it difficult to manage. due to the lack of implementation of segregation programs and comprehensive use. This cross-sectional study carried out in 2019 had the purpose of characterizing the commercial generators of solid waste on the Campus of the Universidad de Panamá, due to the significant amount they produce, which suggests comprehensive management as a strategy to minimize their generation. The research showed an exploratory phase to capture and systematize relevant information, and a descriptive phase for the details on the generating sources. A questionnaire was applied to key people, covering three dimensions of the study: recycling culture, waste generating activity and waste typology. 68 premises were considered (cafeterias, kiosks and photocopiers) according to the records maintained by the Universidad de Panamá. The results demonstrated the need to sensitize the owners about the segregation of solid waste by providing information on health aspects and the implementation of environmental conservation strategies, the possibility of taking advantage of the benefits of recycling through alliances with the university for solid waste management, from its generation to its final disposal, and the possibility of creating new jobs.
