Morphological and physiological parameters of pepper plants inoculated with Funneliformis mosseae under hydroponic conditions and with high copper concentrations

Industrialization and agricultural activity, through the use of fertilizers and pesticides, have caused severe environmental pollution. The heavy metals incorporation is one of the problems that most concern organizations linked to environmental monitoring. Copper is an essential micronutrient for plant growth but in high concentrations it is toxic. Arbuscular mycorrhizae actively participate in the heavy metals metabolism, increasing the tolerance of plants growing in contaminated sites. The morphological and physiological responses of pepper plants inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae in increasing concentrations of copper in a hydroponic culture were evaluated. Morphological measurements (dry weight, foliar area), physiological measurements (stomatal conductance and resistance, greenness index, leaf temperature, relative conductivity of cell membranes) and biochemical (protein pattern, content of malondialdehyde) were made. The growth of the non-inoculated or inoculated pepper plants showed a decrease with the increase of the copper concentration in the medium. The plants inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus could withstand a higher concentration of copper than the non-inoculated ones and this concentration varied according to the parameter analyzed. In general, in mycorrhized plants an increase in the tolerance threshold to copper was observed.
