Rice in “Cerrado” soils with water deficiency, and its response to phosphorus

Results of three field experiments show that water is the main limiting factor in upland rice production in Cerrado soils. When water is not the limiting factor, deficiency of phosphorus is the most limiting factor. Under normal conditions yield increases significantly up to application of 150 kg/ha P2O5. When water is limiting, application of phosphorus does not help in increasing yield. Maximum water requirement of upland rice is about one week before flowering. Upland rice consumes 30% of its total water requirement as vegetative growth period, 55% during reproductive growth period and 15% during ripening growth period. Water deficiency during reproductive growth stage causes high sterility and decrease in grain weight, thereby reducing grain yield.

Water deficiency during reproductive growth stage causes high sterility and decrease in grain weight, thereby reducing grain yield.
