Rainfall probabilities in Boa Vista, RR, Brazil

Monthly precipitation probabilities were computed for Boa Vista, RR, Brazil. Besides, using values of the moisture availability index (MAI), the climate and productivity of the area were classified. The results of this study showed that, at 75% probability level, there exist four months (May, June, July and August) with depths of rainfall above 120 mm, and two (april and september) above 50 mm. This means that the growing season in this area can be extended to six months, with April and September opening and closing the cycle. Due to severe climatic limitations (five to six dry months), it is not recommended to grow humid-climate perennial crops in this locality. The climate of the area is humid-dry and of possible productivity under rainfed agriculture, for crops that require a good soil-moisture level during at least six months.
