Root system distribution of upland rice cultivated in dystrophic dusky-red latosol

Two experiments were conducted to study the distribution of root system of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars: a) under field conditions and b) in PVC tubes 100 cm long and 10 cm of diameter. In the first experiment early cultivar IAC 164 and late cultivars IAC 1246 and Perola were tested. In the second experiment these same three cultivars and also early Pratão Precoce and Dourado Precoce were tested- In both experiments, the sampling of dry matter was evaluated on layers of 20 cm depth. Under field conditions no differences were observed among cultivars in relation to root dry weight on different layers, and also to total root and total shoot dry matter production. In the experiment performed using PVC tubes it was observe a significantly greater amount of root dry matter on late cultivars IAC 1246 and Pérola in relation to the early ones. However, the data were not enough to differentiate cultivars with greater ability of root penetration in the soil.
