Evaluation of the efficiency of Pontederia crassipes in the removal of wastewater cyanide from the thermochemical industry

The thermochemical industry is one of the anthropogenic activities that generate the most cyanide wastewater, constituting a risk to the health of populations and surrounding ecosystems due to the high toxicity and harmful effects of this waste. Therefore, these industries use physical and chemical processes to treat their wastewater before disposing of it back into the environment; however, such processes are often considered invasive to ecosystems. In this context, phytoremediation is an ecological alternative for the treatment of such effluents. Therefore, this research seeks to evaluate the efficiency of cyanide removal by Pontederia crassipes to treat wastewater from the thermochemical industry through experimental tests with different conditions. The results showed cyanide removal efficiencies of up to 70% after five days and using closed systems. Also, a total cyanide removal of up to 13mg/L was obtained. These results show that phytoremediation with Pontederia crassipes could be an efficient alternative for wastewater treatment in the thermochemical industry.
