Biofortified crops interspersed with coffee: improve family nutrition and earn additional income

Planting semi-annual crops such as maize and beans in the coffee pathways during the harvest stage has been an option traditionally used by coffee growers, as a practice to add profitability to the business before obtaining the first coffee harvest. The recent launch of biofortified varieties of maize and beans with high yield, nutritional quality and adaptation to the agroecological conditions typical of the Colombian coffee zone offers a new opportunity for producers to improve family nutrition and increase their income from the competitive harvests sale without affecting coffee productivity. This presentation summarizes the advances made by Cenicafé in relation to agronomic management and the advantages of planting biofortified maize and beans under the intercropping system with coffee

El reciente lanzamiento variedades de maíz y fríjol biofortificados de alto rendimiento, calidad nutricional y adaptación a las condiciones agroecológicas propias de la zona cafetera colombiana ofrece una nueva oportunidad para que los productores mejoren la nutrición familiar y aumenten sus ingresos a partir de venta competitiva de las cosechas sin que se afecte la productividad del café. Esta presentación resume los avances generados por Cenicafé en lo relacionado con el manejo agronómico y las ventajas de la siembra de maíz y fríjol biofortificados bajo el sistema intercalado con café. O plantio de cultivos semestrais como milho e feijão nas entrelinhas do café durante a etapa de vegetação tem sido uma opção tradicionalmente utilizada pelos cafeicultores, como prática para adicionar rentabilidade ao negócio antes da obtenção da primeira colheita de café. O recente lançamento de variedades biofortificadas de milho e feijão de alto rendimento, qualidade nutricional e adaptação às condições agroecológicas típicas da zona cafeeira colombiana oferece uma nova oportunidade para os produtores melhorarem a nutrição familiar e aumentarem sua renda com a venda competitiva das safras sem afetar a produtividade do café. Esta apresentação resume os avanços gerados pelo Cenicafé em relação ao manejo agronômico e as vantagens do plantio de milho e feijão biofortificados em sistema consorciado com café.
