Brushes and gouges against gender violence: Frida Kahlo, Isabel Villaseñor, Aurora Reyes and María Izquierdo

In Mexico, gender violence, as a device of power against women, was very common during the 1930s. While the popular corridos and red news in the press tried to naturalize and justify its existence, a group of female visual artists formed by María Izquierdo, Frida Kahlo, Aurora Reyes, Isabel Villaseñor, and the folklorist and feminist Concha Michel, adopted a counter-hegemonic perspective to make visible and denounce gender violence, dismantling with their images, songs, and writings, some of the pernicious prejudices that tried to justify such violence.
