Growth of Cedrela lilloi (Meliaceae) in the Yungas areas near Los Toldos, (Salta, Argentina)

Sidán, Olga Myriam. 2011. “Growth of Cedrela lilloi (Meliaceae) in the Yungas areas near Los Toldos, (Salta, Argentina)”. Lilloa 48 (2). Cedrela lilloi C. DC., is a characteristic tree of the Yungas, of forestal importance. In this study, we quantify the production of wood and estimate the growth rate and the theoretical shifts of cuttability. The wood samples basal slices, came from the area between Los Toldos and the Lipeo River, on the northwestern edge of the Baritú National Park, Salta, which were the result of selective logging. For their treatment, dendrochronological techniques were used. The slices were polished, allowing the rings to be counted, estimate their age and measure their thickness. The obtained ages from 10 samples ranged between 61 to 154 years, with an average of 112 years. The maximum value of the average of cumulative radial increment is 22.70 cm radius at 137 years, and the behaviour was sustained, maintaining a positive trend in samples in excess of 120 years. The average of the cumulative basal area is 0.19 m2 at 137 years without a tendency to stabilize. The estimated theoretical shift of cuttability was 137 years due to sustained growth. This study is a contribution to the, forestal management guidelines of C. lilloi, a species of high commercial value.
