Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) pollination service estimation by tripped flowers quantification
Biotic pollination directly affects yield of most of crop species. Therefore, monitoring the pollination service in a crop field is very important, although it rarely occurs. Certain pollination mechanisms, such as the explosive mechanism of flowers, would allow farmers to estimate the crop yield quickly and efficiently. The objective of this study is to evaluate a methodology for estimating the pollination service in crops with explosive pollination mechanism through the quantification of tripped flowers. For this, we used 16 alfalfa (Medicago sativa) lots in eight fields located in the Valle Bonaerense del Río Colorado, where we conducted pollination experiments and assessed the proportion of tripped flowers (visited) per inflorescence and the plant reproductive success (estimated as fruit set). Our results showed that a) in alfalfa, non-tripped flowers have a very low probability of becoming fruit, b) a single effective visit is sufficient for fructification, and c) successive visits do not increment the probability of fruit formation. On the other hand, we demonstrated that the proportion of tripped flowers is positively related to fruit set. Our results evidence that the assessment of tripped flowers can be an efficient tool to quantify the pollination service in a crop with an explosive mechanism. Although this methodology does not explain the causes of fructification deficiency, this tool may become the first step in crop problems detection, without neglecting the long-term studies that will improve pollination service in an effective way.

La polinización biótica afecta de forma directa al rendimiento de la mayoría de especies vegetales cultivadas. Por eso es importante monitorear el estado del servicio de polinización en un lote; sin embargo, es raro que esto se lleve a cabo. A la hora de realizar mediciones, ciertos mecanismos de polinización —como el mecanismo explosivo— le permitirían al productor estimar el rendimiento de un cultivo de una manera rápida y eficiente. El objetivo del presente estudio fue poner a prueba una metodología de conteo de flores disparadas para ser utilizada como estimador cuantitativo del servicio de polinización en cultivos con mecanismo explosivo de polinización. Para ello usamos 16 lotes de producción de alfalfa (Medicago sativa) en ocho sitios del Valle Bonaerense del Río Colorado, donde realizamos experimentos de polinización y cuantificamos la proporción de flores disparadas (visitadas) por inflorescencia y la producción de frutos. Los resultados mostraron a) que las flores de alfalfa no disparadas por un polinizador tienen muy baja probabilidad de formar frutos, b) que una sola visita efectiva es suficiente para la fructificación, y c) que sucesivas visitas no aumentan la probabilidad de formación de frutos. Asimismo, demostramos que la proporción de flores disparadas en un lote se relaciona positiva y significativamente con la producción de frutos. Nuestros resultados evidencian que cuantificar las flores disparadas puede ser una herramienta eficiente para estimar la cantidad de servicio de polinización en un cultivo cuyas flores poseen un mecanismo explosivo de polinización. Aunque esta metodología no le permitirá al productor saber cuáles son las causas de la deficiencia en la fructificación, esperamos que sea el primer paso en la detección de problemas, sin dejar de lado los estudios a largo plazo, que permitirán mejorar el servicio de polinización de una forma más efectiva.
