The political view of the Latin American field in science, technology and society
The field of Science, Technology and Society studies in Latin America has strongly emphasized, since its early origins in the sixties and seventies, a political view of the relationship between scientific-technological issues and the economy, culture, society and development of countries. Here we discussed some possible reasons for this regional particularity, linked to the permanent bridges that have been established and reinforced between “hard” and social science fields, as well as between academic production and political action in governments and international organizations. These interactions represent virtuous circles that must be promoted and encouraged, in order to improve both public policies on science and technology and academic production in the field.

El campo de estudios en Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad en América Latina ha tenido, desde sus tempranos orígenes en los años sesenta y setenta pasados, un importante énfasis en una mirada política sobre las relaciones de los asuntos científico-tecnológicos con la economía, la cultura, la sociedad y el desarrollo de los países. Se discuten aquí algunas posibles razones para esta particularidad regional a lo largo del tiempo, vinculadas a los permanentes puentes que se han establecido y se refuerzan entre campos de ciencias “duras” y sociales, así como entre la producción académica y la acción política en gobiernos y organismos internacionales. Estas interacciones representan círculos virtuosos que deben promoverse y fomentarse, en aras de mejorar tanto las políticas públicas sobre la ciencia y la tecnología como la producción académica en la materia. O campo de estudos em ciência, tecnologia e sociedade na América Latina teve, desde suas origens nos anos sessenta e setenta, uma ênfase importante em um olhar político nas relações dos assuntos científicos-tecnológicos com a economia, a cultura, a sociedade e o desenvolvimento dos países. Algumas razões possíveis para essa particularidade regional ao longo do tempo são discutidas aqui, ligadas às pontes permanentes que foram estabelecidas e reforçadas entre campos "duros" e de ciências sociais, bem como entre a produção acadêmica e a ação política em governos e organizações internacionais. Essas interações representam círculos virtuosos que devem ser promovidos e incentivados, a fim de melhorar as políticas públicas sobre ciência e tecnologia e a produção acadêmica na temática.
