Opportunities and challenges related to soil and water ecosystem services in the rural landscape

Ecosystem services related to soil and water stand out in rural landscapes, especially regarding agricultural production. Through soil-water relationships, many ecosystem services are generated and related to the processes of infiltration and recharge of aquifers, surface runoff of water in the soil, transfer of water to plants, provision of food, evapotranspiration, maintenance of moisture and biodiversity of soils, cycling and transport of nutrients, carbon storage and others. This study carried out a survey of the literature focusing on methodologies for the assessment of soil and water ecosystem services, the multifunctionality of the rural landscape and the diversity of ecosystem services generated, related public policies, and opportunities and challenges related to their management. Two case studies developed by the authors were also presented, where the assessment of soil and water ecosystem services occurred in different agroecosystems in the southern (state of Paraná, Brazil) and central (state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) regions of the Atlantic Forest biome. It was concluded that in Brazil, the methods of assessment and valuation of soil and water ecosystem services still need to be improved and validated at different scales and that the role of rural producers must be valued for the conservation and proper management of ecosystem services in agroecosystems and in rural landscape.
