Terrestrial mammal richness and threats to their conservation in Reserva Juan Bautista Alberdi, Oro Verde, Entre Ríos, Argentina

In order to generate a list of terrestrial mammal species in the natural ProtectedLandscape “Escuela Juan Bautista Alberdi” (RJBA, Oro Verde, Entre Ríos, Argentina), sampling was carried out, during the 2019 to 2013 years using five different methods: pitfall traps, transects of sign surveys, roadkill monitoring, interviews and camera-trapping. Fifteen mammal species were detected in the RJBA, where native ones corresponds to 19% of the species reported for the province of Entre Ríos. With a total effort of 658 trap-nights during 12 samplings, seven species of mammals (Rodentia and Didelphimorphia) were recorded, while nine species were detected through an effort of 2.4 km accumulated of transects and 2211 photographic records obtained during 142 camera-days. The best represented Order was Rodentia with five species, followed by Carnivora with three native species. In addition, were registered three invasive exotics: Axis axis, Lepus europaeus and Canis lupus familiaris. Also, were observed six cases of roadkill of the species Didelphis albiventris, Dasypus novemcinctus, Mazama gouazoubira, Cerdocyon thous, Leopardus geoffroyi and Galictis cuja recorded on Provincial Route 11 bordering the RJBA. The roadkill would indicate a certain degree of threat to these species and a risk to running vehicles. It would thereforebe necessary to take mitigation measures for roadkill (renovation and expansion ofroad signs, maintenance and expansion of existing wildlife crossing structures, speedcontrols) to protect the diversity of mammals in the RJBA and avoid roadrisks.
