EFECTO DE LOS NIVELES DE SALINIDAD SOBRE LA DENSIDAD ESTOMÁTICA, INDICE ESTOMÁTICO YEL GROSOR FOLIAR EN PLANTAS DE CARICA PAPAYA L.

RESUMENSe determinó el efecto de la salinidad del agua de riego sobre el índice estomático, ladensidad estomática y el espesor de la lámina foliar de plantas de lechosa (Carica papayaL.). Se evaluaron hojas ubicadas en el sexto nudo en sentido basípeto. Las plantas sometidasa los tratamientos a cuatro concentraciones de salinidad, ajustados a conductividadeseléctricas de 0,001; 2; 4 y 8 dS m-1, presentaron un descenso tanto del índice como de ladensidad estomática, 17,4 a 14,1 y de 399,2 a 265,2 estomas mm-2, respectivamente y unincremento del espesor de la lámina foliar de 1,17 a 2,13 μm, lo que podría considerarsecomo una respuesta morfogenética que permitió contrarrestar los efectos negativos de lassales. Estos valores pueden ser importantes para la eficiencia del uso del agua y para la toleranciade la planta al estrés salino.ABSTRACTThe effect of irrigation water salinity on stomatal index, stomatal density and leafthickness of papaya (Carica papaya L.) was studied in the leaves located from the sixth nodedownwards. Plants exposed to the higher salinity treatmens in the irrigation water showed decreasesin both stomatal index and density, 17.4 to 14.1 and 399.2 to 265.2 stomata mm-2, andan increase in the leaf thickness, 1.17 to 2.13 μm, which could be interpreted as a morphogeneticresponse counteracting the negative effect of the salinity. This could be significant forthe efficiency of water use and the tolerance of the plant to saline stress.
