Henry Pittier y los inicios del Herbario Nacional de Venezuela

RESUMEN El presente artículo relata el proceso de construcción del Herbario Nacional de Venezuela hasta la muerte de su fundador, el botánico norteamericano de origen suizo Henri Pittier (1857-1950).A través de la correspondencia que Pittier mantuvo con funcionarios y colegas locales y extranjeros se muestra la lucha, a la vez que la soledad, que puede encontrar el hombre de ciencia que trata de construir una institución científica en un medio hostil o en todo caso poco sensibilizado para acoger y apoyar iniciativas de ese tipo. ABSTRACT The paper shows the building of the Venezuelan National Herbarium till the death of its founder, theAmerican Botanist born in Switzerland Henri Pittier (1857-1950). It present, through the correspondence that Henri Pittier had with officials and colleagues, local and foreign, the struggle and the loneliness a man of science can find when trying to build a scientific oriented institution in a hostile or unfriendly environment to this kind of enterprise.
