1,1,1-Trichloroethane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon which is manufactured from vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride by chlorination. The world production was approximately 680 000 tonnes in 1988. It is a colourless, volatile liquid with a characteristic odour, and its vapour is more dense than air. It is mainly used in metal degreasing and as a solvent in many industrial and consumer products, including adhesives, spot removers, and aerosol cans. It is also a chemical intermediate.
