Economics on the Use of Oxygenates
The cost of oxygenating gasoline is analyzed considering spot prices prevailing in the American Coast of the Gulf of Mexico from May to July 2003. We found that it is cheaper to oxygenate gasoline using MTBE rather than EtOH, when unsubsidized EtOH prices are considered. Refineries in countries no subsidizing EtOH, having fluid catalytic cracking units, will find advantageous to use light olefins present in the catalytic gasoline to produce ethers.
