Site indices (SI) for the selection and promotion of forest species in the Dominican Republic: Índice de sitios y fomento forestal en República Dominicana

The Dominican forest has been degraded mainly by anthropic activities. In their recovery, different species have been planted, with successes and failures, without considering key determining factors such as site quality affecting the plasticity and range of distribution of the species. The Dominican forest producer has few technical tools for species selection, so the objective of the research was to determine site indexes (SI) as a selection tool for the use and promotion of two forest species in three provinces of Dominican Republic. Based on a list of plantations established in the Dominican Republic, 255 plantations of Caribbean pine (Pinus caribaea Morelet) and native pine (Pinus occidentalis Swartz) were chosen, established in La Vega, Santiago de los Caballeros and Santiago Rodríguez provinces and with ages range between 5 to 40 years. Plantations with signs of deterioration and those that received superior thinning were discarded. With this information, SI anamorphic curves were developed. The determined SI was related to soil´s physical and chemical variables, topographic conditions and environmental factors. La Vega province showed the best conditions for the promotion of species. The SI found, show a expected relationship between growth (SI) and age, as well as productive potentials comparable to those reported by the international literature. The IS information for plantations collected shows that the Dominican Republic requires more specific studies for forest species established in the country.
