Rural Development and the Contribution of Psychology: A Review of the State of the Art

Seventy per cent of the world poor population lives in rural areas. Despite efforts to eradicate poverty, results are limited. Rural development is a process to transform production and change institutions; but psychosocial obstacles exist. Our aim was to explore and describe the synergy of rural development and Psychology as presented in 111 papers published between 1985 and 2012. Selected papers on rural issues used psychological concepts such as perception, beliefs, decision, attitudes, and empowerment. Psychology may make useful contributions to territorial rural development

A pesar de los programas para revertir la pobreza, los resultados han sido limitados. El desarrollo rural busca reducir la desigualdad. Varios obstáculos que se les presentan a estos programas son psicosociales. El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar y describir las vinculaciones entre la Psicologí­a y los procesos de desarrollo rural territorial en 111 publicaciones aparecidas entre 1985 y 2012. En la revisión, se encontró que los constructos utilizados fueron, entre otros, percepción, creencias, decisión, actitudes, participación y fortalecimiento.
