CONTINUOUS PLANTING OF INDUSTRIAL TOMATOES AND SOIL PROPERTIES MODIFICATION IN AZUERO, PANAMA
Agricultural practices and soil management are the most significant anthropogenic activities that alter soil characteristics, mainly marking the direction and degree of changes in its time and space quality. This study was carried out in order to examine the effect of continues planting of industrial tomato in the Azuero region, on some physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. The study was carried out in four localities dedicated to industrial tomato crop for the last 10 years in the province of Los Santos. In each locality, a comparison was made with a little intervened plot by anthropogenic activities (control). Random samplings were carried out following a Zig-Zag pattern, taking four replicates per plot at 20 cm depth. Bulk density, texture, pH, electrical conductivity, Effective Cation Exchange Capacity, aluminum concentration, macro and micronutrients, organic matter content, respiration, dehydrogenase and catalase activity were determined. A t-Student test, correlation and a multivariate analysis of principal components were performed. The soils dedicated to tomato cultivation presented significant higher values for apparent density, electrical conductivity, available phosphorus and more acidic pH, while the soils with little intervention showed higher organic matter content, higher respiration, catalase and dehydrogenase enzymatic activity. Continuous tomato planting in the Azuero region has had a negative effect on soil quality parameters.
