Five trials were conducted during 1985-1987, at Baru and Caisan (Three and two respectively) to test insecticide effectiveness at different dosages and formulations, to control corn soil insect pests. The number of healthy plants were measured 10, 20, 30 and 60 days after planting (DAP), dry grain yield was recorded at harvest. The treatments were: carbofuran 10% G (2000 g a.i./ha at planting (AP); carbofuran 10% G + clorpyrifos 4CE (2000 g a.i./ha + 1300 g a.i./ha AP); clorpyrifos 4CE (1300 g a.i/ha AP); carbofuran 4F (243.2; 120.8; 60.4 and 30.2 g a.i./ha seed treatment (ST); carbofuran 10% G + carbofuran 10% G (1000 g a.i./ha AP + 1000 g a.i./ha 30 (DAP); furathiocarb 666 SCO (243.2; 120 and 62.0 g a.i./ha, ST); furathiocarb 40 SD (238.5 g a.i./ha, ST); carbosulfan 25 STD (159 and 119 g a.i./ha ST). The seed treatment demonstrated a noticeable protective level. Yields with the lowest costs were measured on treatments with carbofuran 4F (30.2 g a.i./ha) and furathiocarb 666 SCO (120.8 g a.i./ha) at Baru; and carbofuran 4F (60.4 g a.i./ha) and furathiocarb 666 SCO (62.0 g a.i./ha) at Caisan. The main soil insect pests were ants (Solenopsis spp.) at Baru, and the white grubs complex (Phyllophaga spp. and Anomalla spp.) at Caisan. These caused the highest damage at 10 DAP.
