SEROPREVALENCE OF EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA IN EQUINES AT THE STATE OF VERACRUZ, MEXICO

Equine infectious anemia negatively impacts equines due to the deterioration of their health and welfare, causing economic losses to their owners. In addition, equines are a poorly studied animal population and it is estimated that equine infectious anemia has a wide distribution in the state of Veracruz. The objective of this study was to determine the serological presence of Lentivirus antibodies, cause of equine infectious anemia, in equines from the regions, Sotavento, Papaloapan, Los Tuxtlas and Olmeca in the state of Veracruz. Blood samples were collected from 781 equines of both genera, 6 months of age or older per region, 231 in the Sotavento, 175 in the Papaloapan, 93 in Los Tuxtlas and 28 in the Olmeca. Sample size was obtained through the software Win Episcope version 2.0, from which the sampling fraction in each region was calculated. The serological diagnosis was made with commercial kits of competitive immunoassay linked to enzymes, which detect the presence of specific antibodies for equine infectious anemia. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics to determine the general seroprevalence, specific to each of the regions, zootechnical function and age, using the software STATA ver. 11.0. The seroprevalence of equine infectious anemia in the four regions was 33.54 % and the specific by region was 15.7 % in Sotavento, 38.8 % in Papaloapan, 26.8 % in Los Tuxtlas and 47.4 % in Olmeca. The seroprevalence for laboring equines and 10 years old was 35.7 % of 392 and 48.4 % of 262, respectively. Equine infectious anemia is present in the four study regions.
