PROFITABILITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF RICE CULTIVATION IN FIVE STATES OF MEXICO
From 1989 to 1993 total Mexican rice (Oryza sativa L.) production decreased 19.8 %; 17.7 % in irrigated areas and 24.4 % in rainfed areas; therefore, imports rose from 168.2 to 1991.7 thousand metric tons. This behavior was observed until 1996, when domestic production reached 494 thousand metric tons, i.e., 19.8 % less than 1989 figures. In this context, the objective of this research was to calculate and analyze the profitability and competitiveness of rice cultivation in irrigated and rainfed farm production units financed by Fideicomisos Instituidos en Relación con la Agricultura (FIRA) of the Bank of México, during the spring-summer 1992-92 and the autumn-winter 1992-93 crop seasons. The hypothesis was that just a few producers were able to compete in terms of advantage over imported rice. Profitability was measured by the ratio of profit to cost of production per hectare. Competitiveness was estimated by comparing average farm prices to domestic cost of production; these cost were obtained by means of 36 interviews collected in Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacán, Morelos and Campeche states, during the 1992-93 crop season. The results showed that only a portion of farms financed by FIRA in Colima, Michoacán and Morelos were profitable, and that none of the analyzed states was competitive in rice production with respect to foreign producers.
