BEHAVIOUR OF THREE ROOTSTOCKS TOLERANT TO THE CITRUS TRISTEZA VIRUS IN NURSERY CONDITIONS

In Cazones, Veracruz, growth of three rootstocks tolerant to Citrus Tristeza Virus were studied under nursery conditions: citranges ?Troyer ? and ?Carrizo? (Poncirus trifoliata x Citrus sinensis) and ?Cleopatra? mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex. Tang). ?Sour? orange (Citrus aurantium Lin.) was the control. Early evaluations of their performance (May and June, 1993) pointed out Sour orange as the best rootstock, but three months later both citranges showed similar stem heigth and diameter as Sour orange. Cleopatra mandarin grew slowly which implies a longer period before it can be grafted. Therefore, both citranges seem to be a good choice to replace Sour orange, which is susceptible to tristeza.

En Cazones, Veracruz, se estudió el crecimiento en vivero de tres portainjertos tolerantes a la tristeza de los cítricos: los citranges ?Troyer? y ?Carrizo? (Poncirus trifoliata x Citrus sinensis) y la mandarina ?Cleopatra? (Citrus reshni Hort. ex. Tang); fungió como testigo el naranjo ?Agrio? (Citrus aurantium Lin.). Al principio del periodo de evaluación (mayo y junio, 1993), el naranjo Agrio presentó mejor comportamiento que los demás portainjertos, pero tres meses después los citranges alcanzaron la altura de planta y el diámetro del tallo del naranjo Agrio. La mandarina Cleopatra presentó un crecimiento muy lento, lo que es desventajoso porque necesita más tiempo en vivero para que alcance la altura y el diámetro suficientes para su injertación. En consecuencia, los citranges representan una opción para la sustitución del naranjo Agrio, el cual es susceptible a la tristeza.
