An approach to the characterization of english and welsh dairy farmers as to progressiveness and attitude toward computerized information systems

A study was conducted to characterize dairy farmers in England and Wales according to their progressiveness and attitude towards adopting computerized information systems (cIS). A postal questionnaire, consisting of 26 statements related to farmers' progressiveness and attitude was sent to 250 users of the National Milk Records (NMR) and to 200 users of the Dairy Information System (DAISY). Some statements included in this questionnaire were agreed to by a high percentage of respondents and thus had little power of discrimination and were considered biased. Characterization was decidedly more effective when done without these biased statements. The respondents could be divided into four groups: progressive dairy farmers with positive attitude towards cIS, progressive with negative attitude, traditional with positive, and traditional farmers with negative attitude. NMR users were more likely to be traditional farmers and DAISY users to be progressive farmers. Participation or not in the cIS systems is more related to progressiveness than to attitude towards the systems.
