Academic achievement This study sought to investigate the relationship between socio-economic background and academic achievement (by means of the case study approach) in a group of fifth form boys and girls. The sample of 63 students was traced over the period 1971 (when they entered the high school on the basis of results in the Common Entrance Examination (CEE)) to 1976. In addition to ascertaining their marks in two foundations subjects--English and mathematics--they were each categorized on the basis of Miller's Index of Parental Occupation (1971) according to Upper SES (traditional middle class) or Lower SES (emerging middle class). Findings of the study point to a significant relationship between socio-economic status and academic achievement. In addition, results also brought out the value of the CEE as a good predictor of high school performance, since throughout the period under review, Free Place winners continued to display their superiority, performing better not only in English, but also obtaining a significantly higher overall average 2022-01-18T17:34:44Z 2022-01-18T17:34:44Z 1976 516 http://hdl.handle.net/2139/52618 CARSEA Journal vol. 1 no. 2 School of Education Library, UWISA - WI RES L97 C2
