______________ INITIAL GROWTH OF PINUS MONTEZUMAE LAMB. IN NURSERY INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES MIXES. ABSTRACT: Sawdust and pine bark are subproducts of forest industry that can be used like substrate and replace the peat moss in thenursery seedling production. The growth of de Pinus montezumae Lamb. seedlings was evaluated. These were produced in container, with substrate mixtures composed by pine bark and sawdust. There were 9 mixtures and one control treatment (60 % peat moss + 20% perlite + 20% vermiculite). Physical and chemical characteristics were determined. The p.H. ranged from 4.2 to 6.3 in the different treatments, electrical conductivity between 0.25 to 3.98 dSm-1, total porosity between 69 to 81%, aeration porosity between 26 to 34%, moisture retention porosity between 36 to 52% and bulk density ranged 0.17 to 0.32 g.cm -3. In the water release curve, not available water ranged 8 to 46%, easily available water rang ed between 6 to 18%, reserve water between 3 to 8% and hardly available water ranged between 18 to 37% in all the treatments. There were significant differences between the treatments in the growth of seedlings at 10 months old. Diameter ranged between 9.7 to 11.5 mm, aerial dry weight between 1.97 to 2.87 g. Root dry weight ranged 3.51 to 61.05 g. Shoot to root ratio in all the treatments was from 1 to 2.5. Mixtures with similar growth to the control and appropriate physical characteristics to produce this species were T9 (sawdust 70% + peat moss 10% + perlite 10% + vermiculite 10%), followed by T1 (bark 10% + sawdust 70% + perlite 10% + vermiculite 10%). Sawdust and bark mixtures produce plants with appropriate dimensions to be taken to the field. This allows reducing peat moss as substrate in forest seedling production.
