Education and development: trends and issues

The introduction of the National Education System Plan (NESP) in 1971 marked the beginning of a new era of educational reform and development in Nepal. The Plan involved far-reaching changes and structural adjustments, particularly in rural areas. This book contains reports of research projects which aim at the implementation of the Plan. To make the school the centre of community development, a model school has been established in each district. These schools set the example for other schools to follow. One of the focuses of the Plan is the promotion of vocational training at all levels. 116 vocational secondary schools have been created all over the country. The Equal Access of Women to Education Programme has been implemented thus far in three colleges. Projects are undertaken to promote the development of low-cost simple instructional materials. An action research project was implemented in 1975 in Lahackok with the aim to develop innovative community-relevant methods and to test their applicability to other villages. An integrated nonformal education programme for adults was started in 1977 and will eventually be implemented throughout the country
