Adult literacy programme: an appraisal of the Adult Literacy Organization of Rhodesia and a plan to mount a National Adult Literacy Training Programme

Part one of this two-part document studies the role of ALOR (Adult Literacy Organization of Rhodesia), one of the literacy organizations for adults in Rhodesia - Section one, discusses the reasons for the study and defines adult education in Rhodesia stressing the importance of functional literacy for adults. Section two describes the main agencies involved in adult literacy and the evaluation of ALOR's literacy programmes. The results of this investigation are listed. Section three deals with the problems in ALOR itself and the problems involved in the actual teaching of literacy in Rhodesia. The findings and recommendations of the investigation are also discussed in this final section. Part two of this two-part document deals with the programme design of new literacy campaigns launched by the Adult Literacy Organization of Rhodesia (ALOR) - It discusses the adoption of ALOR's present systems and the optimum programme length for a mass literacy campaign. The organization of literacy centres is described together with the staffing requirements for literacy programmes. A two-phase transfer policy is discussed, the purposes of which are: 1) to increase enrolment in literacy campaigns, and 2) recruitment and training of literacy teachers as well as staff at a higher level. The costs and financial needs of the programme are listed together with the recommendations for expansion of the present programmes.
