Recurrent education. Policy and development in OECD member countries: United Kingdom

Educational provision for recurrent education in UK is discussed in both current and future contexts in this report - The concept of recurrent education has not as yet taken hold in the UK. A survey of the systems of continuation education and adult education show, with few exceptions, little in common with recurrent education. The emphasis of continuation education remains on youth with the exception of 'post-experience courses' for those with employment experience in commerce and industry. Adult education includes several developments tending towards a recurrent system. One example is the open colleges approach of the Open University with entry procedures and teaching methods characteristics of recurrent education. Though the future is not likely to bring any systematic change or increased educational finance, the author nevertheless sees a gradual movement towards recurrent education by means of subtle social and economic pressures.
