Radio schools in nonformal education: an evaluation perspective

Study on the use of educational radio in nonformal education and the development of radio schools in Latin America - Mass media have been suggested in order to make educational resources available to large groups outside the formal school system. Educational television has been favoured in many countries, but other alternatives (i.e. radio) might be superior in terms of cost effectiveness and flexibility. Radio is now largely used for rural development. A comprehensive programme evaluation must be based on certain criteria: scope of effort devoted to radio schools in a given country, diffusion to other countries, number of people served, quality of performance. The evaluation studies are reviewed with references to: motivation, human promotion, social integration of the peasants, organization and community development, relevance of educational objectives (emphasis on literacy, but wide gap between the national needs and the response), efficiency (lack of comparative studies), nature of the audiences (individual or group instruction)
