KKN: Indonesia's National Study-service Scheme

An account of work experience programmes carried out in Indonesia in the 1971-74 period aimed at relating higher education more closely to national development needs, especially those of rural development - Factors favouring the growth of the national study service idea were the Government objective of social development and earlier traditions of community service. In 1971, 3 universities carried out pilot projects and evaluation of the results led to a much wider range of projects in 1973-74. At this stage, college students from 13 universities spent between 6 weeks and 6 months in rural areas working on a variety of action programmes (community) that were low in cost and used local resources. The records of these projects, the supervision of them and the lessons learnt were embodied in a series of manuals. This experience of university extension has been judged successful enough to be generalized into a national system involving all students.
