Address by Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, at the inauguration of the International Meeting of Specialists in Social and Human Sciences; UNESCO House, 14 December 1987

Speech recalling the purpose of this meeting, which is to reflect on the programmes the Organization is to implement during the 1990s, briefly refers to the important role UNESCO has played over forty years in giving the social and human sciences an international presence and in the emergence and consolidation of these disciplines in parts of the world where they had been almost non-existent prior to the 1960s, also helping to develop international and regional co-operation designed to apply the social sciences to a wide range of problems coming within UNESCO's field of competence
