Report on food security and sustainable development (environment, population, agriculture) in Southern Africa, 2000
Food security and sustainable development is one of the most fundamental and problematic issues Africa has faced since the late 1960s. Since 1974, food security issues have continued to receive global, regional and national attention. Various conferences, declarations, policies, strategies and programmes have addressed issues of food security and sustainable development in Africa. Food Security and sustainable development in Africa need to be addressed in the overall context of economic and social development. Prevailing conditions of high population growth, high poverty levels, food insecurity, the demand for more land for expansion of agriculture, demand for fuel wood, demand for grazing land resulting in land degradation and soil loss, all threaten sustainability of the environment which is the basis for food production, food security and other commodities to support human life.
