Hydrographic surveys, a necessary complement to photogrammetry for topographic mapping
The geographic outline of Tunisia in the Mediterranean Basin gives it 1,200 kilometers of coastline. It is natural that ways and means should be found to make use of this important feature which characterizes it. Indeed, a thorough knowledge of the sea-bed may prove useful for the country's economic development and for increasing its Indus trial potential (fishing, ports, laying of telephone cables, oil and mineral exploration). Leaving the physiological study of the sea-bottom to oceanography, hydrography sets out to provide all the information on the physical state of sea-bottoms, on the depth and the flow of rivers and lakes, etc. Hydrographic surveys are of interest to the Tunisian Survey Department in as much as they complement land surveys for topographic mapping.
