Performance evaluation of the phytogenic feed additive Activo ® on dairy cattle under tropical conditions.

The investigation evaluated the use of natural plant-based essential oils known as phytogenic as a feed supplement for dairy cattle under tropical conditions. The supplement Activo® - 150 mg/kg DMI (dry matter intake) has been shown to directly influence feed efficiency and health status in ruminants. A herd of 44 dairy cattle was divided into two treatment groups: T1 being those supplemented with three grams daily for a period of 75 experimental days alongside a stable concentrate feed ration and formulation, whilst T2 formed our control group, hence receiving no supplementation but maintaining the same feed criteria. The variables analyzed included surface, loin and rectal temperatures taken on six repetitions every 15 days, resulting in minimum but not significant reductions in mean average temperatures upon comparison of both treatments. Other variables analyzed included evaluations of feed conversion in kg of milk for both treatments and milk quality analysis of total solids (fat %, non-fat %, density % and protein %). For milk yield, average means were inferior for T1 by 0.83 kg less than T2; however, all variables for total solids in the milk presented insignificant but improved traits after a month of supplementation for T1 when compared to T2 results.
