Quality Education Counts for Skills and Growth
The quality and relevance of education are paramount to achieve economic growth. International research shows that the subject matter learned and skillset developed in the classroom is the foundation for future success in the work place, and serves as a superior predictor of economic growth compared with the number of years of school. One recent study, using a database of comparable test scores for over 50 countries, finds that a single standard deviation difference in tests scores between countries equates to roughly 2 percentage points in annual long-term Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. These findings hold true across high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries and all geographical regions. Despite significant investments in formal education, economic growth in the region has slowed in recent years and there is a need for improved labor productivity.

En este informe se identifican los principales desafíos que afrontan de los países del Caribe materia de educación. Para lograr un crecimiento económico sostenido mediante mejoras en la productividad se requiere contar con una educación de calidad que prepare a los estudiantes para el mercado laboral. Los países del Caribe han hecho esfuerzos significativos para incrementar la matriculación en educación primaria y secundaria, y han destinado recursos públicos considerables al sector educativo. A pesar del alto nivel de la inversión, la calidad de la educación en el Caribe continúa siendo baja. Desde el punto de vista de la educación formal, estos resultados menos que satisfactorios apuntan a aspectos sistémicos en cada nivel del sistema educativo. La rápida evolución en las habilidades demandadas requiere nuevas respuestas de los sistemas de formación profesional y educación formal. Se requiere un enfoque múltiple entre los sectores público y privado para lograr el desarrollo de habilidades que resulten eficaces y de alta calidad. La experiencia internacional demuestra que cuando los empleadores pueden incidir en el plan de estudio y en la gestión escolar, éstos se involucran en alianzas que tendrán un impacto significativo en las posibilidades de empleo de los graduados.
