Cyanobacteria and algae on historic buildings and monuments
The literature on cyanobacteria and algae in relation to the colonization of historic buildings and monuments, together with probable biodeterioration mechanisms and control methods, is reviewed. Because the organisms concerned are the same as those colonizing natural habitats, attention is also given to colonization and distribution of similar organisms in nature. Epilithic and endolithic cyanobacteria and algae are discussed. Directions for future research are also suggested.
