Grinding-induced effects on goethite (α-FeOOH)
The mechanochemical decomposition of goethite (α-FeOOH) into hematite (α-Fe2O3) has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 adsorption at 77°K. It is postulated that the energy brought about by the goethite deformation during grinding may act as driving force for the transformation. No microporosity was observed during the transformation and only mesoporosity can be detected. The changes in specific surface area are related to changes in particle size and to the reduction in volume during the goethite to hematite transformation.
